WMO Focus Group - October 2016 2016-10-25 Highlights: Continued cooling in sea surface temperatures along the equator and the coast of the eastern Pacific – observations and influences; Hurricane Matthew was an intense storm and generated its own negative velocity potential anomalies among existing positive velocity potential anomalies; A few words from Haiti on the impacts of Hurricane Matthew; Over South America – Late season strong northerly frontal surge with predicted 100-150mm rains across a broad area from Argentina to Colombia; and more!
WMO Focus Group - September 2016 2016-09-29 Highlights: There was a quick look at the usual topics (SST and MJO), followed by a long discussion on Tropical Storm Mathew. Mathew moved over Barbados and other islands including St. Lucia the previous day providing 100-150mm of rain in Barbados and 400 mm of rain in various parts of St. Lucia. Discussion focused on the possible track of Mathew – which will be influenced by how deep and how far east the US trough moves. As Mathew pulls north, it will enhance precipitation in Northern South America.

WMO Focus Group - August 2016 Part a 2016-08-25a Highlights: There were the usual topics – a look at the MJO indices and forecast, Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) patterns and trends (Are we entering a La Nina pattern?), Synoptic weather patterns over South America, Tropical activity (Hurricane Gaston is in the Caribbean: what is the influence of the TuTT? And how to identify the exposed low-level circulation in the visible imagery – as well as a glimpse into what to look forward to with GOES-R (view geocolor/color imagery from Himawari-8). The session was 1.5 hours and the recording was split into 2 parts.
